Here is a simple recipe for homemade tallow soapbut first things first; I’m a big fan of tallow-based products. They deeply nourish the skin especially in the harsh, dry climate we often experience here in Norway (trust me... winter itch here can be next level!). Yet, what I love most about this recipe is that the ingredients are simple, natural, and easy to recognize.
Soap making is a bit of a journey. There’s definitely some trial and error involved (my workspace has seen its fair share of failed batches and shattered soap bars 😅), but don’t let that stop you since this is a great recipe to start with!

🛠️ Equipment
1 large stainless steel pot
1 large spoon
1 large glass bowl
1 kitchen scale
1 stick blender
1 soap mold (~1.3 kg / 3 lb)
1 rubber spatula
🌿 Ingredients
340 g tallow
340 g olive oil
227 g coconut oil
340 g water
130 g lye (sodium hydroxide)
28 g essential oil (optional)
👩🔬 Instructions (Cold Process Soap)
Melt the tallow, olive oil, and coconut oil in a stainless steel pot over medium heat until fully liquid. Let cool to about 32°C (90°F).
Put on gloves. Weigh the lye and water separately. Go outside (or work in a well-ventilated area), and wear a mask if possible. Slowly pour the lye into the water (never the other way around), stirring until fully dissolved. Let cool to about 32°C (90°F).
When both the oils and lye solution are at the right temperature, pour the lye water into the oils.
Use a stick blender and mix until the mixture thickens (reaches “trace”).
Add essential oils if desired and blend well.
Pour into your mold and insulate for about 24 hours.
Remove from the mold, cut into bars, and allow to cure for 3–6 weeks before use.
✨ Tips
Great for anyone wanting to make natural soap without unnecessary additives
Tallow creates a gentle, nourishing, and moisturizing bar
The longer the cure time, the better the soap
